PRE-READERS 0-4
For children summertime can be as full of activity as it is full of downtime, the Summer Reading Program strives to provide opportunities to cultivate early literacy, build social-emotional skills, and bond with your little one.
How It Works:
Throughout the summer, read with your little one and log the time you read together (between June 10th and July 22nd) to earn points toward completing the program. We recommend 15 minutes per day, but enjoyment should take priority over a time goal. (If you wish to keep track of specific books read, you can also register for our 1000 Books Before Kindergarten challenge.)
You can also earn points for attending special events and completing missions or activities within the app. Along the way you will be notified when you have earned badges. Some badges give your little one the opportunity to add a ball to the interactive display in the Children's room! Once your little has earned enough points they'll receive a completion certificate you can print and share!
Pre-Reading Skills
Since little one is primarily being read to and with at this stage in their life, make the focus quality time to work on pre-reading practices like talking, singing, reading, writing, and playing. Incorporating books into your summer routine and activities help pre-readers to work on skills essential to reading.
Some important pre-reading skills are letter knowledge (their ABCs shapes/sounds), print awareness (books are held, read left to right, text and images go together to tell a story), print motivation (the love of books and reading), vocabulary (books have 50% more rare words than adult conversations), phonological awareness (hearing smaller sounds/syllables), and narrative skills (telling a story, beginning/middle/end).
So this summer read with your little one and bond over a love of reading as they grow.
